Krug Park en Plein Air

Several weeks ago I invited fellow artists from the Missouri Valley Impressionist Society for a day of plein air painting at Krug Park (St. Joseph, MO). These small group paintouts are frequent within the MVIS, seeking opportunities throughout our region. It was a good turn out with an average of six artists along with good weather. Everyone traveled; Mike Flora, Richard Sneary and Susan Lynn came up from Kansas City, Kathleen Anderson came from Lawrence, KS, and Doug Frye all the way from Topeka. Not much had bloomed yet, spring came a little late---but that didn\'t keep the serious artist from finding interesting subject matter.

For this trip I decided to bring out the pastels and work three paintings. For each painting I spent 1 full hour with composition and local colors. Afterwards, I took them home and finished them up in the studio with details---spending another full hour on each. Here they are, ready to go.

Painting en plein air at Krug Park lagoon.
For my first painting, I sought out the castle. This Italianate structure is beautiful at all angles, near and far. Not many of the Impressionists have interpreted it. This treasure is one of the few original structures left in our parks, as many others have fallen or have been torn down through time.

My second painting depicts part of an old beaten path. This trail snakes along the edge of the lagoon where many have made their way around it. Artists Dick Sneary, Susan Lynn and myself experienced quite a few passerby\'s on these trails, a little more than usual. We had quite a few complements and pictures taken of us.

The third painting is a view over a hillside across the back side of the lagoon. Nothing was in bloom yet other than the grass turning green. Difficult to view shadows in the foreground due to the slope, I added a few colors to make it more appealing.

Right now, these paintings are available unframed for $250 a piece, or $500 for all three.
After framing, paintings will be available at $300 each.
