Museum Hill en Plein Air

When thinking of areas to paint in town I usually choose those I find worthwhile.  Subject matter and composition are two major things I believe that make a great painting.  How the subject is interpreted, falls second.  I find that a particular subject being painted can be most valued, and helps a painting to become a favorite to many---especially those who have a connection with it.

The historic neighborhood known as Museum Hill (St. Joseph, MO) is definitely worthy of interpretations.  Rich in grand architecture as well as local history, this neighborhood is full of charm from our Victorian Era.  Museum Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods contain many treasures, hundreds of Victorian homes and mansions that are still standing and that should not be forgotten.

Earlier this Fall I invited artists out for a day of plein air painting near the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion---the centerpiece of the neighborhood.  My fellow MVIS artists, some local artists and I spread out along the streets to capture these structures on paper or canvas.  Some of us took on the mansions; while others took on the gardens, or carriage houses.  Whatever we painted, the day was pleasant and the weather was perfect.

The two pastel paintings I have posted above are from the grounds of the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion, formerly known as the St. Joseph Museum.  The yard of this estate is an entire block and has many great views of not only the mansion itself, but surrounding mansions and Victorian homes.  Streetscapes are always a plus, as one can include several of these homes into one painting, interpreting the neighborhoods overall charm and beauty.

Both paintings are available for sale at $350 each.  Both are custom framed.  Those interested may contact via email, bkseevers@hotmail.com.
