1 Day Workshop
This spring I will be offering a 1-day plein air painting workshop in St. Joseph, MO. This will be a great opportunity for those who are beginners or intermediate in outdoor painting and/or in the pastel medium. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of painting using basic techniques and a limited palette.
Trust me, you don't need every stick of color to make beautiful art. My recent works are made up of less than a dozen colors. Too much can be overwhelming when painting en plein air. Don't waste time choosing which shade of green to use. Spend less time choosing and more time painting. When painting from life outdoors, time is against you. Learn to simplify.
In this workshop, we will use a box of 30 Sennelier (plein air set) pastels. I will show you how to simplify; how to crop; how to create depth and mood using pastel painting techniques. A step-by-step approach in creating an impressionistic painting from sketch to finish. You want to create an impression of the scene, not an accurate/detailed photograph. Learn to have fun and work loose. This workshop is a building block for plein air painting and creating fine art.

Try to forget what objects you have before you - a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely think, 'Here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow,' and paint it just as it looks to you, the exact color and shape, until it gives you your own impression of the scene before you.
