"Sunlit Foliage at the Botanical Gardens"

"Sunlit Foliage at the Botanical Gardens"
24x36 pastel on board
2011
-----------------------------------------------
Completed, this pastel painting depicts a patch of wildflowers and other foliage glowing as the rays of summer's sunshine beams down through an opening in the trees. The rays of sunlight are left visible, giving the viewer a sense that he/she is standing in the deep shade of the trees---blurring the background helps create this effect. Alot of detail was left undone in the foreground, the focal point is placed on the highlighted areas. I added some sunlit areas below where sunlight may peer through the tree high above instead of leaving negative space.
This piece portrays an area at the Arboretum and Botanical Gardens of Overland Park, KS.
