Exhibiting: "An Evening with the Arts"

Last night was "An Evening with the Arts" at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center in Mission, KS. The event is private through invitation only, an exhibit I participated in last year. This year I was invited not as an artist, but as a guest in support for a fellow KC Plein Air Impressionists, Gregory Summers. This was a chance to finally meet Greg and view his work in oils. We've both been communicating back-and-forth for quite some time, as with most artists, using Facebook. Though, we both emphasize our work environments differently, (him working in plein air, as I work in the studio) we both share the same artistic style and seem to be attracted to the same subject matter---Kansas City. I find his work to be well composed and inspirational. Just looking at the painting by Gregory I've included in this post, titled "Fanning the Passions," you can see how he portrays his own impressions. Each piece has a story to tell. Some of those stories are hardcore, scaling walls, climbing on roof tops to get a perfect view. You do what you got to do.

Another local artist I've met on Facebook happened to exhibit in the same show, Kale Van Leeuwen. Not an Impressionist, but rather somewhere in between realistic and abstract. His work is definately different, the power of mix media. The art consists of edited photographs, canvas, and paint. In a way you can sense the photography, but it looks like a painting up close, giving each piece a real nice effect.

Greg and Kale's work are on display throughout this month among other local talents.
