"Springtime in Krug Park"
Spring is the opening season for play and enjoyment of warm weather months that lie ahead. It's a time when parks are filled with people who finally get to spend a day outdoors after a long cold winter. The breeze is cool, the sun is warm, birds are chirping, the trees are budding, and the flowers are blooming. Squeaks of the swings and children's laughter can be heard echoing throughout Krug Park. For those who grew up in St. Joseph, these are the sounds many of us remember.
The Krug Park pergola and patio is a Renaissance Italianate structure attached to the castle. The castle's design was never fully completed due to the Great Depression, plans were abandoned in 1927. The structure was once called "The Refectory," originally planned as a banquet hall upstairs and a restaurant below with a terrace garden. Not fulfilling its primary purpose, the city decided to house bears at the castle as a small zoo exhibit for a short period. After that, it later became a playground and picnic area for most of it's existence, which is how most people remember it. It now remains empty.
"Springtime in Krug Park" is part of an ongoing series of work---The Krug Park Collection. It will be included in my artbook titled "Beloved Krug Park." This book is currently in progress.
